Andy Beahrs, Erik Beahrs & Eli Windchy: Making Connections at the Y

When Andy and Erik walk through the front door of the Y, Erik’s smile and animated chatter are in the lead, prompting a chorus of “Hey Erik” from the Welcome Desk Staff.

By the time Erik and his dad Andy arrive, Erik’s mom Eli has already left from her early morning workout. Rarely are all three at the Y at the same time, which is why they were so excited to find a place here for Erik, and why the Y is so important to them as a family.

Adventure Guides

YMCA Adventure Guides is a family program designed to strengthen the relationship between a parent and a child by participating in family activities. Parents lead, direct, influence and teach while presenting opportunities for children to explore the world, while setting a foundation for positive, lifelong relationships between a parent and a child. Typical activities include games, crafts, stories, songs and outdoor pursuits such as camping in Yosemite, white water rafting, hiking, swimming, ice skating and more.

The 4 main direction points on the compass are the essential components of the program.
  • The Family is True North - the focal point of the program.
  • Nature and the camping experience are integral parts of the program.
  • The spirit of the program is experienced through belonging to a small Community, called a Circle.
  • Fun is the magic of the program.

The YMCA Core Values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility make up the other directional points. Along the journey, adults model, teach and demonstrate these values as well as give children opportunities to practice and celebrate them.
