Ishmael Reed: Finding a lifetime of activity at the Y

At the age of six or seven internationally known author Ishmael Reed became a member of the Michigan Avenue YMCA in Buffalo, New York. His parents both worked during the day and the YMCA provided day-care for low income parents.

He has vivid memories of the myriad of indoor and outdoor creative, educational and fun activities the YMCA daily provided for the children.

In 1955 when he was a high school junior, he was presented with the opportunity to travel outside of the U.S. when the Y staff raised the money to send a group of teens to Europe for three weeks. “It changed my life,” says Ishmael.

    3) Increase endurance; lose weight

Come and experience the energy of group training and reach a new goal! No previous triathlon experience necessary.

FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q: How fit do I need to be?
A: This is a beginning group, and if your goal is to complete the triathlon and have a good time, you should be able to swim several laps using any stroke, jog for 10-20 minutes continuously, and be able to ride a bike. The program will gradually help you be able to cover the distances in the race and string swimming, biking, and running back to back.

Q: What equipment will I need?
A: You will need a bike that has been given a safety check to insure that it is sound. Either a mountain bike or a road bike will do fine. A bike helmet is required. You will not need a wetsuit for the events we will do, but you need a swim suit that stays on! Goggles and a good pair of running shoes are also necessary. These are the basics that you will need.

Q: How much time will I need to train to “survive” the triathlon?
A: It differs according to fitness level and your expectations. A pretty good guarantee of a fun, challenging triathlon experience where you will feel that you can finish the entire event will include:
  • 3 - 5 hours per week of training (on your own) in addition to the Wednesday (6:30-8pm) and Saturday (8am) meetings/workouts with Tri-Club.
  • up to 8 hours per week during “peak” training weeks in addition to the Wednesday and Saturday meetings/workouts with Tri-Club.

The first and second meetings of Tri Club will provide workout schedules which will be more-than-adequate “homework” to structure your daily and weekly workouts on your own, so all you have to do is show up!
