Ishmael Reed: Finding a lifetime of activity at the Y

At the age of six or seven internationally known author Ishmael Reed became a member of the Michigan Avenue YMCA in Buffalo, New York. His parents both worked during the day and the YMCA provided day-care for low income parents.

He has vivid memories of the myriad of indoor and outdoor creative, educational and fun activities the YMCA daily provided for the children.

Intermediate Circuit Training

Circuit training is a method of fitness training that is comprised of a number of carefully selected exercises for all the major muscle groups: legs, chest, back, shoulders, arms and abdomen. Each exercise within the circuit is referred to as a station. The performer progresses from one exercise station to another in a numbered sequence; the duration of each station varies from 45 seconds to 1 minute. The heart rate is checked 2 - 3 times in the course of the circuit to ensure target heart rate and fat burning. The entire circuit is usually repeated several times. The physical training effects are related to the increased maximal strength, better muscular endurance and improved power endurance.
