Ishmael Reed: Finding a lifetime of activity at the Y

At the age of six or seven internationally known author Ishmael Reed became a member of the Michigan Avenue YMCA in Buffalo, New York. His parents both worked during the day and the YMCA provided day-care for low income parents.

He has vivid memories of the myriad of indoor and outdoor creative, educational and fun activities the YMCA daily provided for the children.

In 1955 when he was a high school junior, he was presented with the opportunity to travel outside of the U.S. when the Y staff raised the money to send a group of teens to Europe for three weeks. “It changed my life,” says Ishmael.

Recreational Swim

Our pools provide a unique opportunity for families and individuals to enjoy recreational activity in a safe, secure environment.

Parent/Child Swim Lessons

The primary objective of Parent/Child Lessons is to get both parents and children comfortable in the water.  Classes help prepare children for the preschool level classes by being exposed to games that use basic movements, such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control.  Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child.

Preschool Swim Lessons

Preschool Swim Lessons offer children their first experience in the pool without parental assistance.  Children are taught the basic stroke development, personal rescue skills and are introduced to water sports and games.

Youth Swim Lessons

Youth Swim Lessons are for children ages 6 years and older.  Children use repetition and practice to create a student centered environment with well-trained instructors.  This program comprises five main components:  personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports & games and rescue.  Each skill level builds upon the preceding levels, covering all strokes, diving and safety fundamentals.

Inclusions/Special Needs

Inclusion/Special Needs swim programs provide adapted swim lessons for individuals with disabilities and special needs.

Adult Swim Lessons

Adult Swim Lessons are designed to meet the individual needs of each participant. Beginners will learn to enjoy the water, work on fundamental strokes and lap swimming skills. Advanced swimmers will focus on increasing endurance and improving stroke technique.

Private Swim Lessons

Private Swim lessons are for adults and children (ages 3 and older) at limited times on a first come, first served basis.

Adult Stroke Clinics

Adult Stroke Clinics are designed for those who already swim and want to improve their strokes. This class will work on stroke techniques and training tips that will make your strokes more efficient and increase your stamina.

Aquatic Group Exercise

The Y offers a variety of classes in the pool.  All classes work to increase strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness.
